OOU SUG Confronts Police Over Unclear Arrest, Officers Allegedly Open Fire

The Olabisi Onabanjo University Students’ Union Government (OOUSUG) has strongly condemned what it described as disturbing and inhumane actions allegedly carried out by officers at the Oru Ijebu Police Station, located at Oru Bus Stop. According to reports gathered, some students were earlier arrested under circumstances that remain unclear and questionable. In response, the Union’s Legal Director reportedly visited the station to verify the situation and ensure that due process was followed while engaging officers in a lawful and civil manner. However, the situation reportedly escalated as the Legal Director was allegedly subjected to degrading treatment. He was said to have been physically assaulted, kicked, and violently manhandled, including being choked by police officers. A student who accompanied him was also reportedly slapped during the encounter. OOUSUG described the incident as a gross violation of human dignity, professional ethics, and the rule of law. Following the development, the OOUSUG President, alongside other student leaders, reportedly arrived at the station in an attempt to peacefully intervene and de-escalate tensions. Eyewitness accounts further alleged that instead of engaging constructively, the officers resorted to force and, without clear justification, opened fire on unarmed students. The Union has called for urgent attention to the matter, demanding accountability and justice over the alleged misconduct.
