UNIJOS Suspends Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos branch, has called off its recent strike action following the disbursement of March 2026 salaries to its members. The development was confirmed shortly after the union had earlier directed lecturers to withdraw their services over delays in salary payment and the omission of the Earned Academic Allowance (EAA). The industrial action, which began on April 8, was halted after reports emerged that salary payments had been processed. According to the branch leadership, approval for the payment was secured from the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation shortly after the strike commenced. Subsequent verification across faculties indicated that a majority of lecturers had received their salary alerts, prompting the decision to suspend the action. Despite the resolution of the salary issue, the union expressed dissatisfaction over the continued exclusion of the Earned Academic Allowance. ASUU maintained that the omission remains a major concern and urged the Federal Government to address it without delay. The union further called for the full implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, stressing that proper funding and commitment are necessary to maintain stability within the university system. Following the suspension of the strike, lecturers have been directed to immediately resume academic activities, including lectures, examinations, and statutory meetings. However, the union issued a cautionary note, warning that failure to resolve the outstanding allowance issue could result in another round of industrial action before the end of April if necessary steps are not taken.
